Garros mounted his deflector plates on a Morane-Saulnier monoplane like the one shown above. He successfully used the plates to shoot down German planes on April 1st, April 15’th, and April 18’th 1915 (the time period when Kiffin was preparing for the Battle of Artois) but on the 18th his luck ran out. Either ground fire or a malfunction caused his engine to stop, and he was forced to land behind the German lines. The Germans captured his plane before he could destroy it, and they saw how he was able to shoot down their planes.
