While they waited for their planes to arrive their French commander, Capt. Thénault, borrowed an unarmed Nieuport 10 two-seater so the pilots could practice flying. Unfortunately, one of the pilots soon crashed it into a hangar door and wrecked it. In this photo the first four American pilots to arrive at Luxeuil are posed in front of the Nieuport 10. Left to right are Jim McConnell, Kiffin Rockwell, Capt. Thénault, Norman Prince, and Victor Chapman. This is sometimes referred to as the “Tragic Photo” because one year later four of these five pilots would be dead. (Photo courtesy of Washington & Lee University)
