Kiffin was very fortunate that his long untreated wound did not develop gangrene, which would have required amputation. He was also lucky that the bullet missed the bone, as at that time a broken thigh bone proved fatal in 80% of patients. Still, there was serious muscle damage which required a long convalescence.
