Much to everyone’s surprise, the squadron was sent back to Luxeuil instead of to the Somme. A combined British and French bombing raid against the German Mauser Works at Oberndorf was being planned, and the squadron was to provide support for the bombers. Once again the squadron had no planes, but brand new Nieuport 17s with synchronized machine guns soon arrived. They were only issued enough ammunition for two planes, so Capt. Thénault assigned the first two planes to Kiffin and to Raoul Lufbery. On September 22nd, Kiffin and Raoul made two patrols without encountering any enemy aircraft. Kiffin’s mechanic, Michel Plaa-Porte, took this picture of a smiling Kiffin after they returned from patrol. It was to be the last photo ever taken of Kiffin.
