Here a Fokker Eindekker comes in for a landing on the Eastern Front. This photo provides a reminder of the hardships early pilots had to endure. In addition to the stress of combat and the fear of having your airplane catch fire in the days before pilots carried parachutes, pilots had to deal with intense cold, 100mph+ winds from the propwash, noise, vibration, oxygen starvation at high altitudes, and noxious castor oil fumes from the engine.
