Bombing was an obvious use for aircraft, but early planes couldn’t carry much weight. Pilots experimented with improvised bombs, such as hand grenades or cans of gasoline. These steel fléchettes (darts) were one of the first “bombs” specifically designed for aircraft. Dumped over the side from cans or dropped in clusters from racks underneath the plane, they were undoubtedly a dangerous anti-personnel weapon but were terribly inaccurate.
