Kiffin and Paul, together again. This time they’re both using canes – Paul because of his rheumatism and Kiffin because of his leg wound. While on leave in Paris Kiffin would also meet up with an old Legionnaire buddy, Bill Thaw, who had transferred to Aviation and was piloting a Caudron bomber. Bill convinced Kiffin to apply for a transfer to Aviation. Mrs. Weeks promised to use her influence to try to expedite the transfer. When his leave was up, Kiffin was sent to a training camp where he chafed at the fact that instructors with no front line experience were trying to teach recovering veterans how to dig trenches and drill. The training was useless, and the discipline was unnecessarily harsh. Kiffin was about to be sent back into the front lines when his orders to report to pilot training finally came through.
