Kiffin completed flight training under the Farman method and earned his wings in October 1915. There was no specific uniform for the Aviation branch at the time. Pilots normally wore the uniform from their previous assignment. Since the hobnailed boots and greatcoat of the Foreign Legion wasn’t suitable for flying, Kiffin chose a black French Artilleryman’s uniform with a red stripe on the trousers. Here he poses in his new uniform, with his new wings sewn on the collar. (Photo Courtesy of the State Archives of North Carolina)
