When the recruits finished their advanced training at Camp de Mailly, they marched to their first front line assignment near the ruined village of Craonnelle. Most movements from this time on would be done by marching, up to 35 miles per day carrying an estimated seventy pounds of gear. Note the hobnailed boots, and the round loaf of bread on the back of the pack which provided rations for the march. (Photo Courtesy of the State Archives of North Carolina.)
