Kiffin (right) and Paul in their newly issued uniforms. They enlisted in the French Foreign Legion in August, 1914. They were assigned to a unit with recruits from many countries, including several Americans who were already in France when war broke out. Huge losses in the initial battles of the war caused the French to cut training short for any recruits who had prior military experience. Amazingly, almost all the Americans claimed to have such experience. Kiffin and Paul said they had experience in the Mexican army. One recruit claimed several year’s service in the Salvation Army.
