Norman Prince was one of the original members of the squadron and, along with Bill Thaw, one of the people most responsible for pushing the idea of an American squadron through the French bureaucracy. In August he forced a German plane to land far behind the German lines. Normally a “forced to land” result wasn’t counted as an official victory, but Capt. Thénault somehow obtained confirmation for this victory. Kiffin, whose nerves were on edge from combat stress and who had already quarreled with Capt. Thénault, exploded and threatened to transfer to another squadron. Fortunately, Capt. Thénault convinced Kiffin to finally take a long overdue leave in Paris, and things cooled down. The fact that Kiffin scored a victory soon after returning from leave also helped improve his spirits. (Photo courtesy of Washington & Lee University.)
